Read Matthew 6:1-2:
“Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven. “So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.
Prayer: Jesus, sometimes we forget that all good gifts are from you. Too often, we rely on ourselves instead of on you. Open us up to receive your goodness. Help us share your gifts to us with those around us.
From Matthew, Jesus teaches us about giving and cautions against selfish motives in our giving. When do we “blow trumpets” before we give? Why does Jesus want us to give in secret? Do an anonymous act of kindness for someone. How does it feel? Would it feel better if 10 people were watching?
As we move towards Easter, the crucifixion of Jesus and His resurrection we need to keep in mind what Jesus gave to us and the needs of others that we see in our community and in our world.
