Deacons

Deacons in the First United Presbyterian Church of Las Vegas, NM seek to express sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ. It is the duty of deacons to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith.

To carry out the mission of our church family and our mission as a Board of Deacon the following ministries are carried out:

• Card ministry - Cards are sent to people who are experiencing trying times or who have a particular joy to celebrate and be thankful for (birthdays, weddings, newborns).

• Food ministry - When someone is ill the deacons plan a schedule of meals for the family.

• Memorial and funeral receptions - When requested the deacons provide light refreshments, coffee, punch and tea following services so family members may have time to celebrate the life of their loved one among friends.

• Prayer Shawl - We give shawls to people who are experiencing serious health problems. The shawls are hand made and represent congregational prayers for healing and wellness. The shawls are passed around during church services so each person may say a prayer on behalf of the recipient.

• Visitation - Visiting people in the hospital or who are homebound is a important ministry of the deacons.

• Angel Tree - Each year at Christmas the Deacons select a needful project and give Christmas gifts to support it. In recent years Angel Tree donations went to Casa de Samaritan, the Las Vegas homeless shelter.

The deacons also contribute to the First Methodist Church weekly soup kitchen and to Samaritan House.

If you are in need to a visit or other assistance from the deacons, contact starrschip@gmail.com or the church at fupc.nm@gmail.com.
